Will the USPS be Privatized?
President-elect Donald Trump is revisiting plans to possibly privatize the Postal Service, something he first floated back in 2018 (2018 government reorganization plan).
Unions and Congress thought it was a bad idea then, and skepticism remains.
On Monday, December 16, Mark Dimondstein, president of the American Postal Workers Union (APWU), said, “Privatization would end universal service. Right now, the USPS delivers to every address, regardless of who we are or where we live. Universal service is especially important to rural America. Privatization also would lead to price-gouging by private companies,” Dimondstein said.
For four decades, the APWU has fought for dignity and respect on the job for the workers, as well as for decent pay and benefits and safe working conditions. The APWU represents more than 200,000 USPS employees and retirees, and 2,000 private-sector mail workers.
At the current time, there appears to be significant House support for Trump’s incoming Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE); per a hearing las week, privatizing some USPS operations.
President-elect Trump’s plans to reshape the federal workforce (beyond just the Postal Service) has federal employees across the government sharing their concerns.
The conversation has begun afresh, and any potential impact - while concerning - is not likely to have to be implemented without significant planning, input, and a lengthy rollout timeline.
